*1  The secrets in mobile app testing revealed (and how to test them)

Presented by: Michaël Pilaeten from CTG in Belgium

Mobile apps and games are taking over large parts of the software industry. These apps and games vary in size, complexity, business model, price and lifespan, which makes it difficult as a tester to create your own testing toolkit to verify and validate the quality of these apps and games. There are, however, quite some secrets embedded in those pieces of software. This talk will help you – as a tester, but also as a developer or analyst – to better understand how apps and games are created (or should be created), and thus how it should be tested. I elaborate on the design patterns in these apps and games and how users unconsciously are tricked into spending more time behind their smartphone or tablet. How can we as testers – verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the design pattern, or even improve the pattern based on our feedback?

Michaël Pilaeten is working as Learning & Development Manager in CTG in Belgium and describes himself this way:

“Breaking the system, helping to rebuild it and providing advice and guidance how to avoid problems. That is me in a nutshell. With 14 years of experience in test consultancy in a variety of environments, I have seen the best (and worst) in software development.
In my current role as Learning & Development Manager, I’m responsible for guiding our consultants, partners and customers on their personal and professional path towards excellence.”

*2 Could you be inspired to change how you work with test by a visit to a restaurant?

Presented by: Klaus Olsen from softwaretest.dk

Klaus got inspired to work with the way he is planning and performing test executions after a visit to an amazing Italien restaurant in Covent Garden in London by watching how effectively customers were seated when entering the restaurant. Experiencing the speed in which a glass of Prosecco was served, and the way the waiters made you feel welcome, inspired Klaus to work more on preparing how to get a test execution session up and running. Making all the invited testers feel welcome and at ease with the job ahead of them.

Within 5 minutes the waiters were back to take your order and shortly thereafter the first serving was placed in front of you, simple, logistically sound, and service at its best. This inspired Klaus even more to work on how test executions could be underway within 10 minutes after starting a test session, and what is required for this to happen.

Klaus Olsen is working as a consultant for companies who need a Test Adviser, Test Mentor or Test Manager based from his own company softwaretest.dk

Klaus is a member of the DSTB board, and chairman of ISTQB Foundation working group. Klaus continues to work as a consultant with his main focus on software testing for over two decades.
